Face contouring without surgery: masseter toxin, chin and jawline filler
A slimmer, more defined lower face can come from relaxing a muscle, adding a little structure, or both. The right answer depends on what is making the face look wide.
What makes a face look wide?
Before choosing a treatment, it helps to know what is actually creating the shape:
- Muscle. A strong masseter muscle (often from teeth clenching or grinding) creates a square lower face.
- Bone. A short or retruded chin makes the lower face look wider and less defined in profile.
- Fat. Fullness under the chin or along the jaw blurs the jawline.
- Skin and support. Early jowls interrupt the jawline from the side.
Looking at the face from the front, the side and at an angle, and feeling the masseter as you clench, usually makes the cause clear. A slim face from the front can still lack definition in profile, and that needs a different solution.
Masseter botulinum toxin: slimming a square jaw
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the signal from nerve to muscle. In the masseter, this lets the muscle relax and, over several weeks, reduce in bulk, which softens the angle of the jaw and gives a more tapered lower face.
What to expect:
- a short procedure of a few injections on each side, taking about 10–15 minutes
- the effect begins after about one to two weeks; slimming develops over four to eight weeks
- results last about four to six months, after which the muscle gradually recovers
It may also help people who clench or grind their teeth, although this should be assessed medically.
Possible effects include bruising at injection sites, temporary chewing fatigue and, uncommonly, asymmetry or a change to the smile if the toxin affects nearby muscles. In some people with more skin laxity, reducing muscle bulk can make sagging along the jaw look more obvious, so this needs to be assessed in advance.
Chin and jawline filler: adding structure
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers formulated for structure can be placed close to bone to:
- project or lengthen the chin, balancing the nose and lips in profile
- define the jaw angle and jawline, creating a cleaner line from ear to chin
- camouflage early jowling by supporting the area in front of it
The result is visible immediately, with some swelling for a few days. It commonly lasts around 12–18 months, depending on the product and the area.
Safety
The most important risk with any filler is vascular occlusion: filler entering or pressing on a blood vessel. It is rare, but it can affect the skin and, very rarely, vision. Safe practice includes:
- detailed knowledge of where vessels run in each area
- careful technique, for example using a cannula where appropriate and injecting slowly
- hyaluronidase available on site, and knowing what warning signs to look for
- clear aftercare instructions, so you can report pain, colour change or blanching quickly
Other effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, small lumps that usually settle, and rarely infection.
Combining treatments
Contouring often works best as a plan rather than a single product:
| Concern | Common approach |
|---|---|
| Square, muscular jaw | Masseter botulinum toxin |
| Short or weak chin | Chin filler |
| Undefined jawline in profile | Chin filler, then jawline filler if needed |
| Early jowls | Support with filler or threads, plus an energy-based lift |
| Fullness under the chin | Assess fat versus laxity; options differ |
A common sequence is to slim first with toxin, review after about two months, then add structure only where it is still needed. This tends to use less product and gives a more natural result.
Contouring is about proportion. The aim is a face that looks like the best version of itself — not a shape borrowed from someone else.
Frequently asked questions
How long does jaw botox take to work?
The muscle begins to relax after about one to two weeks. The visible slimming develops gradually over four to eight weeks as the muscle reduces in bulk, and is often best at around two to three months.
How long does masseter botulinum toxin last?
Typically around four to six months. With repeated treatments, some people find the muscle stays smaller for longer between sessions.
Will jaw botox affect chewing or my smile?
Some people notice mild chewing fatigue with tough foods for a few weeks. Changes to the smile are uncommon and are related to injection placement; they are temporary.
How long does chin filler last?
Hyaluronic acid fillers designed for structure commonly last around 12 to 18 months in the chin and jawline. Duration varies with the product, the amount used and individual metabolism.
Can filler be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is also an important part of managing complications.
